Soy Silk Another bio-degradable and environmentally friendly fabric that is becoming increasingly popular is Soy Silk. The fabric soy silk origninates from the soybean- a type of legume. The soy bean is the main ingredient of tofu. The residue from the making of tofu is what is used in making soy silk (S.W.T.C 2012). This is used as it would other wise be discarded, and wasted. The Soybean is completely renewable and bio-degradable source, coming from the earth itself, which when made into fabric is the perfect substitue for regular, man-made silk. This is a fairly new techinique brought to the industry through the uprise of technology and science. Soy Silk has many superior properties that help its increasing popularity. One of these properties is that it is very soft and luxurious. This also contributes to the way it looks when worn, and its lovely texture. It drapes well also (Start Up FASHION 2012). Another property of this fabric is its warmth, and comfort. It is a breathable and ventalating fabric, with moisture absorbing properties also (S.W.T.C 2012). Unlike silk, Soy Silk fabric is wrinkle free, does not shrink when washed, and as it comes from a natural fibre, takes dye very easily (Start Up FASHION 2012). The environmental advantages of the Soy Silk is that the fabric is made including a completley renewable and bio-degradable source; the Soybean. The fabric itself does not use any form of valuable sources, and is a brand new version of cashmeare and silk alternative The properties of Soy Silk give off the feel of any other superior man-made material, except that it is enviromentally friendly. This, combined with the properties would give a great deal to any type of cutting edge garment. |
